Così fan tutte ossia La scuola degli amanti (Thus do they all, or The school for lovers) – this is the full title of one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last operas. It is not without reason that Alfred Einstein, a biographer of the genius Viennese, described it as follows:
“This opera is like a wonderful bubble, shimmering with the colours of buffoonery, parody, feeling both authentic and pretended. But added to it, is the colour of pure beauty ”.
The opera was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II, and its world premiere took place in Vienna in January 1790. Boiling with emotion, the frivolous play quickly gained the recognition of the thrill-seeking audience. The sheer perfection of the world-famous opera buffa is revealed both in the wonderfully constructed original libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte and in Mozart’s sensational musical score. The accurately portrayed characters, witty dialogues and superbly composed group scenes make Così fan tutte timelessly entertaining for viewers. However, the opera also leaves room for reflection on the nature of human feelings.
