Why do we conduct OPERA WORKSHOPS?

Universal values never go out of style, and the magic of opera has been drawing audiences for over 400 years, offering performances full of sensations, emotions, delight, and the pleasure of experiencing art together.

To make this experience fuller, more conscious, and more accessible, the Polish Royal Opera launched a series of educational events in 2024 titled Opera Workshops. Its main goal is to introduce audiences to the world of opera as a synthesis of the arts, to inspire creative thinking, and to build a relationship with contemporary audiences.

Workshops and concerts

In forms adapted to each age group, we introduce topics related to different elements of operatic art: the libretto, music, set design, choreography, and stagecraft. We reveal the secrets of operatic language and bring opera repertoire closer to participants. Most workshop scripts include an artistic presentation that offers a point of reference or inspiration for further exploration of the topic. We work with groups through storytelling, visual art activities, musical games, performance, and movement-based tasks. Participants actively engage in the event and can feel their own creative agency. Close contact with artists and specialists of the Polish Royal Opera (soloists, orchestra musicians, conductors, make-up artists, wardrobe staff, piano tuners) allows the knowledge and energy to flow in both directions. Participants learn the secrets of working in a theatre, while opera staff discover what captures the interest of today’s audiences and what kind of opera they wish for.

In Warsaw and the Mazovia region

Depending on the age of the participants, events are enriched with cultural, social, or historical context, and the forms of activities are adjusted to the group’s level of understanding and energy. Educational events take place at the Royal Theatre in the Old Orangery at the Royal Łazienki Museum, as well as in cultural centres across Warsaw and the Mazovia region.
