Co-founder of Parisian bohemia, scandalist, and precursor of new music trends – this is how one can characterize the colorful figure of French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925). His harmonic experiments inspired Claude Debussy, and his interest in repetitiveness preceded the concepts of American minimalists. In his compositions, he successfully combined elements from ancient traditions with the latest ideas and his own unconventional sound concepts.

The concert program, which is a tribute to the composer who died 100 years ago, will open with the melancholic Gymnopédies, considered to be a harbinger of the development of the ambient genre. The similarly styled vocal-instrumental Trois Mélodies from 1886 delight with their delicacy and perfectly capture the mood of the poetry of J. P. Contamine de Latour. On the other hand, the songs full of musical surprises from the cycle Trois Mélodies from 1916 are a testament to the refined sense of humor and irony characteristic of the eccentric creator.

The concert will also feature compositions by musicians for whom Satie’s discoveries were a significant source of inspiration. We will hear the songs of Claude Debussy, shimmering with diverse colors and shades, as well as pieces by two members of the famous Group of Six. In Trois poèmes de Jean Cocteau Op. 59 dedicated to Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud evocatively depicts the charms of the artistic district of Montmartre in the interwar period. The nostalgic and charming musical image of Paris is also present in one of the songs from the cycle Banalités by Francis Poulenc to the words of Guillaume Apollinaire from 1940.

The concert will conclude with two heart-warming cabaret songs by Erik Satie – the waltz-like Tendrement and Je te veux. Their enchanting melodies and light character seem to be a testament to the fact that Paris is truly the capital of love.
