Anything without action is unworthy of the theatre.
– claimed Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the great dance revolutionary known as “the father of modern ballet”, author of the famed Letters on Dancing and Ballets. After his highly prolific years in Lyon, in 1760 he began his employment in Stuttgart as a ballet master for the Prince of Württemberg, Charles Eugene. With a 120-person ensemble with 20 soloists, Noverre successfully implemented his innovative ideas, collaborating with the outstanding composer Nicolo Jomelli, set designer Seryandoni, and costume designer Bouquet. Drawing on themes from mythology and ancient history, he created content-rich ballets in an entirely new form – ballet d’action. Simplified costumes, an expressive face not hidden behind a mask, meaningful and dramatic gestures – these are the hallmarks of a new understanding of the art of ballet, in which dance not only delights but also moves deeply, speaking in its own language.
What would the history of ballet at the Polish court of Stanisław August have been like if the king had accepted Noverre’s proposal when he offered him his services? We will never know. However, the fact that the ideas of this outstanding master will for the second time echo in the Stanisławowski Theater in Łazienki Królewskie in Warsaw is indisputably a source of great joy. The ballet was presented for the first time at the Festival IN TEMPORE REGUM. Music in the Time of Kings in September 2020.
