Where shall I find a flower?
Where shall I find green grass?
The flowers have died,
the grass looks so pale.

(Wilhelm Müller, transl. Richard Wigmore)

An excerpt from the song Erstarrung (Numbness), the fourth number in Franz Schubert’s (1797–1828) cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey), conveys the somber atmosphere of this genius work, one of the composer’s supreme lyric achievements. The author of more than 600 songs was able to invest even the most concise vocal forms with profound expression and a wealth of unspoken meanings. Fascinated by poetry from childhood, he created some of its boldest interpretations, woven from captivating melodies, varied harmonies, and subtly shifting textures.

Winterreise was Schubert’s second song cycle based on the poetry of Wilhelm Müller, following Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill) of 1823. Completed in 1827, near the end of the composer’s all too brief life, it may have reflected the melancholic state of mind of an artist aware of his illness. The songs were originally written for tenor and piano, but were soon transposed for other voices, and over the course of two centuries of undiminished popularity they have inspired numerous arrangements for a wide variety of esnsembles. At this concert, Winterreise will be heard in an orchestral version arranged by the contemporary Italian composer and conductor Massimiliano Matesic. The richly colored orchestral part subtly emphasizes the varied emotions tormenting the abandoned lover as he carries his grief, longing, and vain hopes through the snow-covered landscape.
