Signor Bruschino, ossia Il figlio per azzardo from 1813 is the last of five one-act operas composed by Gioachino Rossini for the Venetian Teatro San Moisè. The libretto by Giuseppe Foppa can make one’s head spin: Florville wishes to marry his beloved Sofia, yet her guardian, Don Gaudenzio, opposes the match, planning to give her in marriage to the son of his friend – Don Bruschino. And here begins a true farce, whose musical tempo could probably be driven only by the genuine master of comic opera, Gioachino Rossini. The innkeeper thinks Florville is Don Gaudenzio’s secretary; Florville pretends to be Bruschino’s cousin, or the young Bruschino himself, making a fool of old Bruschino, who – how is it possible? – does not recognise his own child! But he who laughs last, laughs best. When Don Bruschino recognizes the complexity of the intrigue, he joins the game himself, wishing to take revenge on Don Gaudenzio. Love ultimately triumphs, but how many unexpected twists and turns, how many unbelievable situations will unfold along the way…
It is this intricate story, far too rarely shown on theatre stages, that the excellent opera director Jitka Stokalska returns to after many years. In the new staging of Rossini’s farce, she creates a world that is partly real and partly dreamlike, where wakefulness blends with sleep and reality can surprise not only the characters but also the audience. None of this would be possible without the superb music, delightful in its lightness, virtuosity, and originality. The rousing overture with its characteristic tapping of the bow on the stand offers a perfect preview of a mixture of disarming lyricism and comic brilliance brewed in the fumes of absurdity, while the mastery of the arias and the sheer madness of the ensemble scenes make this improbable story vivid and genuinely amusing.
