Cherubino pines for the Countess, the Count has his eye on Susanna, Marcellina longs for her once-promised marriage to Figaro, and the Countess laments her “lost illusions of love.” The superb libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, after the play by Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais, brims with intrigue that reaches its climax in the castle garden, under the cover of darkness: the Countess dressed as Susanna, Susanna dressed as the Countess, Cherubino kissing the Count, and Figaro getting slapped… more than once. This is but a glimpse of this wild tale combining Italian commedia dell’arte with French farce, dazzling with witty dialogue and intricate ensembles. The thirty-year-old Mozart filled this play script to the brim with his musical genius. Arias that perfectly capture each character’s nature touch the heart with their refined vocal and instrumental lines. Playful duets and trios, sextets and septets, together with the incomparable artistry of the orchestral parts – already evident in the famous overture – all pulse with irrepressible energy and sheer creative exuberance. Yet beneath the surface of universal, hilarious romantic mischief, in the elegant and refined musical runs, hides a quietly growing unease: the faint breath of history is waiting at the palace gates. The rigid social order quivers, and the servants’ cheeky boldness toward their masters both amuses and unsettles.

Le nozze di Figaro belongs to the core repertoire of nearly every opera house and holds a special place in the history of the Polish Royal Opera. It was the staging of this very opera that inaugurated, in 2018, our institution’s entire series of productions of Mozart’s works in subsequent artistic seasons. After years of experience, we return to this title in a completely new form – this time in an original staging directed by the master of musical comedy, Jitka Stokalska – to plunge once again into the brilliant synergy of word and sound, into the “operatic ideal.”
