Che lieto giorno! What a happy day! The first words from the opera La finta giardiniera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart perfectly introduce the light and cheerful character of the whole concert. They will be immediately followed by humorous arias from the same work. Serpetta will teach you the art of seduction, Nardo will try to impress her with his erudition, and the proud Arminda will shake her finger at her fiancé, frowning upon his tardiness. We will also hear fragments from The Marriage of Figaro, written by the Viennese master more than a decade later. Here, however, it is not the arias that lead the way, but the brilliant ensembles. The dramatic perfection of the ensemble scenes is expressed, among others, in a duet of backstabbing courtesies between competing ladies (Che lingua!… Via, resti servita). Between the passages by Mozart, we will hear fragments of one of the first Polish operas. In Agatka, czyli powrót pana (“Agatha, or the Master’s arrival”) by Jan Dawid Holland, the names of the characters tenderly refer to their weaknesses. Pijaszka (‘Carouser’), therefore, will confidently praise the charms of good alcoholic beverages, and Plociuchowa (‘Blabbermouth’) will comment on Podstarost’s character with her typical sauciness.
Comic operas – both those from the 18th and 19th centuries – are an inexhaustible source of works that perform exceptionally well not only on a theatre stage accompanied by an orchestra but also in chamber arrangements. The sophisticated intrigue in Rossini’s Cinderella (La Cenerentola) or the romantic tribulations of the protagonists of L’elisir d’amore find the most perfect expression in lively performances of arias and ensembles, which, during this happy summer evening, will be provided by the excellent soloists of the Polish Royal Opera accompanied by the pianist Dagmara Dudzińska.
