Just before the applause or after the baton is raised. Extended by a fermata or as brief as a short breath. Silence, pause, rest. Can it be loud? Does it have a melody? Does it always signify rest, or can it instead create great tension? We will explore these questions through the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini, Stanisław Moniuszko, and contemporary composers. Silence filled with sound will take on many forms and resonate with many voices – as the many members of the Chorus of the Polish Royal Opera will sing from the stage, the balcony, the audience, and behind the scenes. Along the way, we will uncover the role of the choir in opera – and perhaps even create one of our own on the spot. But for now – shhh…!
