Georg Philipp Telemann is undoubtedly among the most prolific talents of the Baroque era, having written approximately 3,000 compositions representing all genres and styles of that time, among which are instrumental pieces intended for various ensembles. In Ouverture-Suite TWV 55:B1, the composer adds two oboes to the strings and basso continuo, which sometimes cooperate and sometimes compete with the other instruments. The musical dialogues perfectly reflect the character suggested in the titles of the subsequent parts – joy, flattery, or banter.
The cantata Dixit Dominus by George Friedrich Haendel will surely put listeners in a more serious mood. Written in 1707, it is one of the composer’s earliest autographs preserved to this day. The musical interpretation of Psalm 110 was created in the early months of Haendel’s trip to Italy, where the young composer was to perfect his craft surrounded by the most prolific musicians. Already in this early work, Haendel’s versatile skills were revealed: both in the choirs and in the solo passages, he perfectly reflects the craftsmanship and richness of the monumental Roman style. The cantus firmus woven into the composition emphasizes faithfulness to tradition, refined polyphonic sections are proof of his solid background in counterpoint, and the dramaturgical sensitivity is a preview of the master’s theatrical fascinations, which will later be reflected in his opera and oratorio works.
