In addition to the rich heritage of madrigals and brilliant dramatic works, Claudio Monteverdi also left behind excellent religious works. Many of them were created in Venice, where the composer held the position of maestro di capella in Saint Mark’s Basilica from 1613 until his death. A summary of this creative period was an extensive collection published in 1640 entitled Salve morale e spirituale. Certainly, it represented only a selection of pieces created during almost thirty years of his service as Kapellmeister, yet the volume is a testimony of the extraordinary richness and diversity of the composer’s works.
In the mass parts, psalms, hymns, and antiphons preserved in the collection, the deep spiritual dimension is in perfect harmony with the expressive, subtly constructed soundscape. Monteverdi makes full use of the potential of the concertante technique (e.g. in Laudate Dominum omnes gentes), and also eagerly draws from the heritage left by Renaissance composers and his experience in writing madrigals. The solemn Gloria for seven voices and an instrumental ensemble that closes the concert is one of the most brilliant pieces in the master’s entire legacy, using the full potential of the concertato style. It is possible that the piece was part of the thanksgiving mass that Monteverdi presented after the Black Death subsided in 1631.
