The Polish Royal Opera once again joins in the Night of Museums – a unique celebration of culture and art. On this special evening, the enchanting space of the Old Orangery in Warsaw’s Royal Łazienki Park will be filled with a variety of music performed by outstanding soloists of the Polish Royal Opera, accompanied on the piano by Dagmara Dudzińska.

The first two concerts will be devoted to Polish vocal lyricism. At 19:00, we will hear songs by Stanisław Niewiadomski, combining – as Irena Poniatowska observed – “the spirit of Polish poetry with beautiful vocal arrangements,” along with works by Jan Gall, full of simplicity and charm. At 19:25, soloists of the Polish Royal Opera will perform Kalina by Ignacy Marceli Komorowski, which enjoyed great popularity in the 19th century, selected songs from Op. 18 by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, likely written under the influence of his deep affection for Helena Górska, as well as deeply moving songs by Mieczysław Karłowicz set to the poetry of Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, which was a particularly strong source of inspiration for the composer.

After a short break, the stage of the Royal Theatre will be taken over by the powerful emotions embedded in German Romantic songs. The depth of feeling is expressed in a particularly striking way in Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe, set to poems by Heinrich Heine. The piece opens with a declaration of love, not coincidentally containing a musical quotation from a composition by Clara Wieck-Schumann. However, emotions of the heart can take many forms, as will be proven by moving interpretations of selected songs by Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, and Strauss.

In the year marking the 270th anniversary of the birth and the 235th anniversary of the death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, no program would be complete without excerpts from the operas of the Viennese master. Audiences will therefore get the chance to hear Nardo’s advances from La finta giardiniera, admire the wit of the charming Susanna from Le nozze di Figaro, explore the nature of love as understood by Dorabella in Così fan tutte, and finally, together with Zerlina, succumb to the charm of the title character in Don Giovanni. The evening will conclude with the king of comic opera, Gioachino Rossini. Excerpts from the famous L’italiana in Algeri and the Duetto buffo di due gatti, attributed to the master of comic opera – though most likely arranged by the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall – will surely leave the audience in a cheerful mood.
