Singing, feasting, dressing up, and dancing – should we add anything else to the recipe for a successful party? And are these forms of celebration close to us, modern people? During the workshops, we will discover where the word “carnival” comes from and what it meant in the past. We will reach for the works of Renaissance and Baroque composers: we will listen to the sound of the lute and theorbo and let ourselves be enchanted by an old English love song. One of the texts of the 16th-century pieces will also feature a mysterious spinning object, which is still a companion of children’s games today. I wonder if you can guess what it is? The overture to George Frideric Haendel’s opera Imeneo will lead to a minuet danced in a costume and mask – one of the international symbols of carnival today. Of course, we will also set our bodies in motion: we will learn a simple branle, and at the end, we will look for inspiration in historical choreographic records and together we will sketch the choreography of the final procession.
The workshop is intended for children aged 4+.
