Everyone knows Charles Perrault’s version of Cinderella, a fairy tale full of magic and fantastic characters. But in Rossini’s opera, you will not find a fairy Godmother, a magical carriage, or a glass slipper that fits only one single foot in the whole kingdom. In the libretto written by Jacopo Ferretti on the basis of earlier texts by Charles-Guillaumme Etienne and Francesco Fiorini, instead of the fairy, there is the sage Alidoro, the character of the evil stepmother is replaced by the unjust stepfather, and instead of the shoe, there is a bracelet, thanks to which the prince recognizes his beloved. However, what remains is the triumph of Cinderella’s modesty and grace over the greed and vanity of her half-sisters and the unconditional goodness of the girl ill-treated by her closest relatives, who forgives her abusers in a happy ending.

Telling the fairy tale half-jokingly, half-seriously, Rossini does not shy away from virtuosity, setting ambitious tasks for all the soloists. Since its world premiere, which took place at the Carnival of 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome, many great singers have taken on the main roles. After the cool reception of the first performance, just like in the case of The Barber of Seville, each subsequent performance met with great recognition. Soon, the opera conquered the stages not only in Italy, but all over Europe, and has enjoyed enduring popularity until ever since.
