Uniquely talented, well-educated, and loved by the audience… Gioacchino Rossini was hailed by his contemporaries as the greatest Italian composer of his time, overshadowing other prominent artists, such as Bellini and Donizetti. It was only Verdi who finally was a match for him when it comes to fame and recognition.
Rossini’s widespread recognition is not surprising. After all, this extremely prolific composer left behind works that took Italian opera to a new level and set new directions for the development of French music. Especially his comic operas, such as Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), delight with their perfectly outlined characters and the ingenuity of musical solutions reflected in interesting overtures, brilliant arias, ingenious ensembles, and captivating choruses.
