The end of the nineteenth century, La Belle Époque… The heyday of French culture was especially favourable for the creators of excellent musical works such as the genius Gabriel Fauré, whose famous Pavane, Op. 50 from 1887 opens the concert program. Fauré composed this piano miniature having been inspired by the solemn nature of the court dance of Spanish origin. He could not have foreseen that the inconspicuous piece would inspire numerous arrangements for various instrumental ensembles, including a wind quintet.

The musical themes from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen also turned out to be a surprise hit. After all, the work, which premiered in 1875, received a rather frosty reception, but at present, this title belongs to the must-see repertoire of opera theatres around the world. The suite composed of the most famous fragments can now be heard performed by various ensembles. Today’s concert is a great opportunity to once again admire the famous melodies, which gain a surprising new splendour in aerophone arrangement.
On the other hand, Paul Taffanel’s Wind Quintet in G minor (1878) does not enjoy a similar popularity today. It should be remembered, however, that it is thanks to this outstanding Parisian flautist that we may enjoy one of the few late-Romantic quintets originally intended for wind instruments. Drawing on the accomplishments of former masters, the composer preserves the classical three-part formal arrangement. The piece delights with its melodic inventiveness, interesting harmony, sweeping style and skilful use of the timbre and technical capabilities of individual instruments.
