Bastien und Bastienne is one of the first operatic works by the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The charming singspiel was created in 1768 at the request of the famous physician Franz Anton Mesmer when Mozart was only 12 years old. This one-act stage play consists of simple yet very graceful arias and amusing dialogues.
Bastien und Bastienne can therefore be described as a kind of “operatic plaything” where the young Wolfgang Amadeus translates his childhood feelings into the language of music. We see innocent advances, impertinent jealousy, fiery declarations, but also magic personified in the character of the sorcerer Colas. The piece was brilliantly composed – with the sensitivity and coquetry characteristic of Mozart. The composer also uses the full potential of a small orchestra to bring out its captivating sound. Fast action, idyllic scenery and a brilliant depiction of the relationships between the three main characters – all this adds finesse and lightness to the performance.
The character of the mysterious magician is brought to life by the famous illusionist Maciej Pol. The roles of Bastien and Bastienne are played by outstanding soloists of the Polish Royal Opera, accompanied by the Orchestra conducted by Lilianna Krych. The production was directed by Jarosław Kilian – an art historian and recognized theatre and opera director.
