EVENT AS PART OF THE FESTIVAL IN TEMPORE REGUM – Music of the Time of Kings
Everything which is deprived of action is unworthy of the Theatre.
– claimed Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), great reformer of the dance, often called the “father of modern ballet”, author of the famous Lettres sur la danse et sur les ballets (Letters on dancing and ballets). Having spent extraordinarily prolific years in Lyon, he then moved on to serving as ballet master in Stuttgart in 1760 at the court of Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg. Having a 120-person ensemble at his disposal, including 20 soloists, and cooperating with Niccolò Jommelli – the outstanding composer, Seryandoni the stage designer and having Bouquet responsible for costumes, Noverre successfully put his inventive ideas into practice. Drawing from mythology and antiquity, he created expressive ballets in the whole new form of ballet d’action. A simplified costume, distinctive face (deprived of a mask), and a meaningful and fully dramatic gesture – these were the elements of a whole new meaning to the ballet art, in which dance not only delights, but also moves and speaks its own language.
What would the history of the ballet have looked like at the Polish court of king Stanislaus Augustus, had the king accepted Noverre’s services when he offered them? We will never know. It is delightful, however, to know that such grand master’s ideas will find their way to the stage at the Theatre of King Stanislaus Augustus at the Royal Łazienki Park in Warsaw during the IN TEMPORE REGUM Festival. This will be a historical moment, as the Polish Royal Opera will, for the first time, have the honour to invite the Spectators to a ballet premiere.
