Soprano – one cannot deny that it quite naturally… rises above other voices – the Italian word sopra literally means “above.” For many people, it is this highest female voice that first comes to mind when thinking of opera. It is usually sopranos who became primadonnas – the leading singers in the theater. Although the term has over time acquired somewhat negative connotations (primadonna means “star”, a capricious person, looking down on others with superiority), one must still acknowledge sopranos’ high position – at least in musical harmony.
We will listen to sounds in the soprano registers in several different arias, and later our sopranos will briefly descend from their heights to get close to the workshop participants. The soloists of the Polish Royal Opera – Gabriela Kamińska and Justyna Stępień – will talk about the secrets of voice emission and the challenges of opera. The distinct qualities of the two artists’ voices will provide an opportunity to showcase the richness of soprano sounds and to introduce terms such as lyric soprano, dramatic soprano, breeches role, coloratura, and leggiero. During the session, we will also engage our bodies and voices. We’ll explore how sound is influenced by breath and muscle work, body posture, and even mood. We’ll investigate where the voice truly originates and create a few “acoustic layers” for working with sound waves. Group singing in the soprano range is not planned, but we may hum a few tones together, providing a backdrop for the sopranos to shine.
The workshop is intended for children over the age of 9.
