EVENT AS PART OF THE FESTIVAL IN TEMPORE REGUM – Music of the Time of Kings
Music played a significant role at the royal court – for not only did it serve as entertainment, but it also increased prestige of the ruler and helped to shape their image. Augustus II, ruling both Poland and Saxony, became famous for his particular care for high standards of the artistic settings of royal parties. Apart from having the royal ensemble, the court also saw foreign music bands, including Louis Deschaliers’ French opera troupe, which was staying in Warsaw in the beginning years of the 18th century.
It is very likely that this outstanding team’s Warsaw repertoire included Jeana-Baptiste Lully’s last and most remarkable piece – Armide, an opera in the genre of tragédie en musique, and André Campra’s L’Europe galante – an opéra-ballet. In both pieces, dancing plays a very significant role. In Grzegorz Markiewicz’s words: “While tragédie en musique’s role was to move and astonish, the opéra-ballet served more as an entertainer and enchanter, as its action was dominated over by dance and music”. It can be most notably heard in the instrumental fragments of both of the excellent compositions, which will be performed here by the Period Instruments Ensemble of the Polish Royal Opera Capella Regia Polona.
