The production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) at the Polish Royal Opera enjoys continuous popularity. This masterpiece which, for over two hundred years, has been present in opera houses all over the world, still delights with its perfection of form and lightness of musical passages.

The opera’s libretto was written by Lorenzo da Ponte, based on Pierre Augustine Beaumarchais’ comedy Le marriage de Figaro, ou La folle journée. Although the idea for adapting this particular play came from Mozart himself, it was Da Ponte who rose to the challenge and delivered the brilliantly written script to which Mozart, in turn, created a musical masterpiece. In fact, the opera’s libretto is an effective combination of a captivating and dynamic plot with a series of comical intrigues. Also deserving of special attention is the diversity of human characters, which Mozart so perfectly portrayed through his music. The characters’ dilemmas and joys are brought to life in signature arias and numerous ensembles, while the duets and trios liven up the scenes, their musical substance only proving the composer’s sensitivity to the changeability and depth of human emotions.

The words and sounds, together with other means of stage expression, come together in the perfect combination in Le nozze di Figaro. Its musical and dramatic genius, along with the universal message and situational humour has made this four-act opera buffa the perfect entertainment for generations of music connoisseurs ever since its premiere in 1786.
