It is difficult to determine the time of creation and addressee of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata Non sa che sia dolore BWV 209. The composition tells the story of suffering caused by the necessity of parting from a best friend. However, the despair, resounding in the first part of the composition, later interweaves with a tone of hope, to eventually, in the final aria, change into an encouragement to boldly face challenges of the new and unknown.

Meanwhile, full of joy and delight is the wedding cantata Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten BWV 202, which will be heard in the concert finale. Modest requirements concerning the performers (the soprano being only accompanied by oboe, violin and basso continuo), indicate that it was probably created for the occasion of a bourgeois or noble wedding. Its humorous and dance-like character would certainly be out of keeping with any court house. It might have been composed for Bach’s own engagement to Anna Magdalena in 1721. Its wonderful music perfectly accords with the literary content. The early scenes of harsh and dark winter later transform into a landscape full of life of the newly blossoming spring.

Between the two cantatas, we will hear Overture in G-minor, numbered 1070 in the Bach Werke Verzeichnis catalogue. The authorship of this composition, however, raises doubts. The main source – a copy produced by Christian Friedrich Penzel in 1753 – provides merely a signature: “Sig. Bach”. Some researchers are therefore more likely to assign this work to Wilhelm Friedemann, the oldest of Johann Bach’s sons, which could be indicated by the very style of the composition, as well as the relationship between this highly talented descendant of the Master and Penzel.
