Ladies and Gentlemen,
We warmly invite you to the 9th Summer Festival of the Polish Royal Opera, which will be centered around the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The celebration of the 270th anniversary of his birth and the 235th anniversary of his death offers the perfect opportunity to embark on a musical journey through the radiant and diverse universe of the Viennese master. His brilliant music, interpreted by outstanding artists, will bring new life to the historic spaces of the Royal Łazienki Museum – and beyond.
This exceptional celebration of music will open on the 19th of June with the grand premiere of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, under the musical direction of Marta Kluczyńska (with a second performance on the 20th of June). A whirlwind of color, humor, and emotions will be set in motion by the unrivaled master of musical comedy – stage director Jitka Stokalska, for whom “theatre is simply all of life, and a happy life at that.” Her signature idiom, combining a traditional approach to staging with fidelity to the score and a touch of wild inventiveness, may also be admired in the performances of Così fan tutte on the 10th and 11th of July.
Then, on 1 July, through the opera Die Zauberflöte directed by the late Andrzej Klimczak, the Artists of our institution will invite audiences gathered in front of the Palace of Culture into a magical world of sounds. The event is part of the unique Central Square of Music Festival, co-created by ten Warsaw cultural institutions.
For Mozart’s inexhaustible imagination, the operatic genres seria and buffa served merely as a point of departure for works that transcended traditional boundaries. A notable example of a work that eludes this traditional classification rooted in Italian music is Don Giovanni, which will be performed at the Royal Theatre on the 17th and 18th of July under the baton of Marta Kluczyńska. This extraordinary interweaving of tragic and comic elements, along with the deep psychological portraits of the characters, was brought to the Polish Royal Opera stage with his signature reverence for the score by the late Ryszard Peryt. Established conventions are likewise transcended by Idomeneo – a work astonishing in its inventiveness and originality, which in Marek Weiss’s interpretation gains a distinctly Polish accent. Dawid Runtz will conduct the performance on the 25th of July, thus concluding the entire festival.
Before that, however, we will turn to chamber music. During the concert on the 25th of June, we will hear the Gran Partita – the charming Serenade in B-flat major, KV 361/370a. It is impossible not to be enchanted by the richness of wind timbres, shifting from lyrical to powerfully expressive. Meanwhile, on the 4th of July, the historic interior of the Carmelite Church will be filled with the moving tones of Mozart’s religious works, performed by the Soloists, Chorus, and Orchestra of the Polish Royal Opera, conducted by Marta Kluczyńska.
On the 27th of June, our youngest music lovers are invited to a special staging of The Magic Flute prepared specially for them by the late director Andrzej Klimczak and conducted by Karol Szwech. Mozart’s sublime music, breathtaking costumes and sets, and an imagination-stirring story are sure to leave a lasting impression – not only on children. Meanwhile, on July 23, during the educational concert Meeting with MOZART’S MAGIC. FOR SOPRANO, TENOR, BASS, AND, OF COURSE, THE FLUTE, Anna Szawiel and the soloists of the Polish Royal Opera will introduce the youngest audience to the world of ‘musical magic,’ through which Mozart so convincingly captured the personalities of his characters.
