Ledwoś ruszył wojsko swoje,

Tryumf przyszedł w ręce twoje,

Tryumf fortunny a sławny,

Jakiego nie miał wiek dawny.

Barely had you moved your army,

When triumph came into your hands,

A triumph fortunate and famed,

Never before seen in the olden days.

This stanza finishing the Pieśni Kalliopy Słoweńskiej na teraźniejsze pod Byczyną zwycięstwo by Krzysztof Klabon to the lyrics by Stanisław Grochowski excellently depicts the great victory of the Polish army led by hetman Jan Zamoyski in 1588. The National Independence Day brings the perfect opportunity to commemorate the greatest events in the history of the Republic of Poland, especially those which were also made famous in songs.

The concert will also feature the oldest of the Polish anthems – Bogurodzica and Gaude Mater Polonia – hymns sung by the Polish knighthood when they were squaring up with the enemy. Those melodies could have also accompanied Polish forces preparing for the battle of Byczyna, in which they achieved a great victory over archduke Maximillian Habsburg’s forces. The victory was recorded and made famous by Krzysztof Klabon, one of the most distinguished musicians at the royal court, in a series of six compositions. The programme will also feature charming dances from Jan of Lublin’s Tablatures, which, similarly to other songs taking up subjects of political events, resounded during official court ceremonies. Compositions will be performed and interpreted by outstanding artists specializing in early music and will be played on replicas of period instruments, which will surely bring about the atmosphere of those past times.

The 16th century was also the heyday of religious songs. Among many of them, this genre brought us beautiful psalms by Mikołaj Gomółka to the lyrics of Jan Kochanowski. And the prayer character of Sebastian Klonowic’s Piosnka uczyniona czasu powietrza, kiedy było interregnum w roku pańskim 1572, in which one begs for an end to pandemic, seems particularly relevant today.
