Maciej Kamieński (1734-1821) came to Poland at the age of about 30-40. Who could have imagined that this musician, born and educated in Slovakia and having developed his talents in Vienna, would go down in history as a Polish national composer?
The Polish character of most of his dramatic works is evidenced not only by the language of the libretti, but also by folk themes and, above all, by the music itself, resounding with the rhythms of dances such as the Mazurka, the Krakowiak and the Polonaise. The same can be said of the operetta Słowik, czyli Kasia z Hanką na wydaniu (‘The Nightingale, or Kasia and Hanka, two marriageable girls’), whose action takes place in a rural environment.
The simple but charming chants abound in figures of the Mazurka and Oberek or characteristic harmonic progressions. The composer excelled at capturing the flavour of Polish folklore, making use of conventional forms or alluding to the character of traditional singing, all the while maintaining his own melodic inventiveness. After all, it was not without reason that Bogusławski saw in Kamieński the one who “dared to point out to them [the Poles], in this kind of fun, the delightful dawn of nationality”.
