Polish music of the Romantic era abounds with charming songs. Their development is greatly acknowledged to Stanisław Moniuszko (1819-1872), whose songs will crown this concert’s programme. By publishing his Pierwszy śpiewnik domowy (Songbook for Home Use, No. 1), Moniuszko took up the challenge of creating a songbook repertoire for the Polish nation, and he admirably succeeded. For not only did he create the extensive catalogue of vocal music of various song types, but he also became an inspiration to further generations of artists. His followers, Stanisław Niewiadomski and Jan Gall, became continuators of the idea to broaden the Polish lyrical repertoire and make the whole nation sing. They would successfully make music to the lines of Polish poetry and take advantage of the rich heritage of Polish folklore.
The concert will also feature selected songs by Jan Gall (1856-1912) – very popular in the 19th century, now somewhat forgotten. It is a pity though, as this composer’s pieces, full of modest charm, hid real pearls. His exceptional lyrical talent is mostly reflected in the richness of melody and, as Zdzisław Jachimecki observed, its “utterly Italian sweetness”. Both Gall and Stanisław Niewiadomski (1859-1936) cared about maintaining correct prosody, but the latter paid much more attention to highlighting the text’s drama. After all, Niewiadomski was also famous for his meticulous care in selecting poetry based on its literary value. Quoting Irena Poniatowska, „linking the spirit of Polish poetry with a vocally beautiful composition, with features of accessibility and folklore and, at the same time, with a note of courteous sentimentalism […] is exactly what won Niewiadomski’s songs […] great popularity, publicity and remembrance’.
