The beloved summer residence of King Stanisław II August – the Royal Łazienki – resounded with music in the last years before the fall of the Republic. And although today it is difficult to determine the exact repertoire of the time based on general accounts stating that during social gatherings people “entertained themselves by listening to music” or spent time “to the sound of a musical ensemble”, there is no doubt that on the Łazienki stages – both inside the buildings and in the open air – alongside opera and ballet performances, symphonies, overtures, divertimenti, serenades, and dances were also featured.
On Flag Day, the artists of the Polish Royal Opera revive the tradition of making music surrounded by the beautiful park greenery and classical architecture. The concert at the Great Annexe will open with the enchanting phrases of Spring from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. The wonder of a world re-awakening to life will resonate in the Flower Duet from Léo Delibes’s opera Lakmé and in the miniature The Swan from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. Beethoven’s delightfully airy Minuet in G major will be paired with the ever-popular Minuet by Luigi Boccherini. The program will also feature excerpts from the two Peer Gynt suites – the hopeful Morning Mood and Solveig’s Song, which evokes images of Norwegian landscapes through its folk-inspired motifs. Beloved chamber works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will also be performed – the elegant Divertimento in B-flat major from 1770 and the ever-majestic serenade Eine kleine Nachtmusik, completed by the Viennese master in 1787. The concert will conclude with Antonín Dvořák’s playful Humoresque, certain to leave the audience in high spirits.
