Genius symphonist, master of musical drama, afficionado of the human voice. Ladies and gentlemen, may we present you Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – central figure of today’s concert, whose life and oeuvre have inspired generations of artists. This night, filled with the Viennese master’s music, will start from the symphony of a cheerful character, listed 201 in Köchel’s catalogue. Composed by the 18-year-old Mozart in Salzburg, intended for a smaller set of instruments (beside strings, the score comprises only oboes and horns), this composition is especially subtle. The grace and sensitivity with which the composer uses the sound of wind instruments, is well worth noting.
The second part of the concert will feature audiences and performers’ favourite opera fragments – Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, La finta giardiniera and Don Giovanni, each of them ripe with musical pearls which can freely be performed outside of the opera context. After all, Mozart’s genius also lies in his perfect ability to render a person’s character – be it comical or dramatic – in a single aria.
