Strong and sometimes fanfare sound of wind instruments was often used by the 18th century composers for their “outdoor” creations – light in form and entertaining. Such is Divertimento, K 213 by Mozart, intended for open-air performances and so endearing in its simple form.

Altogether different in character was Clarinet Quintet, K 581, once described by Alfred Einstein as typically “chamber-like”. Indeed, the sweet and charming sound of a clarinet, treated much like a solo instrument and accompanied by deep tones of string instruments almost beg for a properly resonating space. Interiors of the 18th century Royal Theatre will certainly create a proper atmosphere for this chamber music of the highest order.

The concert finale will see three pairs of instruments – clarinets, French horns and bassoons – in Beethoven’s Sextet Op. 71. The composer sent this piece to his publishers Breitkopf & Härtel in 1809, with a self-deprecating comment:

[This] Sextet is one of my earlier works, and worse, it was composed in just one night. All in all, there is nothing more to say about it than that it was written by a certain composer who created at least a few more pieces better than this one.

Such self-criticism, however, did nothing to impair the charm of the composition which, in itself, is also an important testimony of the creative path of the last of the Viennese classics.
