Heroes and heroines – great characters whose dramatic fates became the basis for the musical tales of the Baroque era. Full of twists and turns, the often tragic adventures of mythical heroes prompted composers to create music full of tension and suffering, but also joy and hope. Phenomenal arias and duets still remain a challenge for singers – both in terms of singing and acting, also offering instrumentalists a wide field for interpretation.

The music of Georg Friedrich Handel invariably delights with its inexhaustible inventiveness. In beautiful vocal parts, the composer was able to perfectly convey the drama of a breakup (the duet of Floridante and Elmira), the extraordinary bond between mother and son (the duet of Cornelia and Sesto), and all the various shades of love, which may be faithful (the aria of Tolomeo) and a source of true happiness (the duet of Radamisto and Zenobia), but sometimes may also lead to murder and madness (the aria of Dejanira).

Antonio Vivaldi entrusted the singers with parts that were no less moving. Also in his works, faithful love may serve as proof of the hero’s virtue (Griselda) or be the cause of his inglorious deeds (Ottone). The passions depicted with sounds are deeply touching, and the heroes of the story are not always easy to judge from a moral standpoint.
