Flute, clarinet, viola – each of these instruments has its own original character. Individual expression of an instrument is multiplied when diverse tones interchangeably merge and compete with each other in their musical relationship.
The light Trio in C major by Ludwig van Beethoven, marked with a high number of op. 87, may seem like one of works from the composer’s mature period. In fact, it was composed in the beginning of the 1790s, soon after Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. The work is extremely popular with talented amateurs and was arranged for varied instrumental make-ups. Little wonder – the young composer brilliantly used the potential of the traditional four-part classical form. The work is opened by the vivid Allegro, filled with beautiful motifs, then we hear the lyric Andante, followed by Minuet (which, however, displays certain features of Scherzo, characteristic for Beethoven), and everything is completed by the captivating Presto finale.
