While most eighteenth-century composers sought patrons at courts, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) – thanks to a royal privilege – printed and sold the scores of his own compositions. That way, this highly popular French composer not only made a fortune but was also able to work independently, which was unique at that time. In his work, he successfully combined elements characteristic of his national style with the achievements of Italian artists. Thanks to his excellent sense of harmony, extraordinary talent, as well as knowledge of the musical tastes of contemporary listeners, his vocal and instrumental pieces were eagerly performed by contemporary musicians. The concert will feature works from both genres: one of the melodious sonatas and two cantatas from the series Les 4 saisons (Four Seasons) – Le Printemps (Spring) and L’Été (Summer) – interpreted by the great soprano Olga Pasiecznik.
The program will be complemented by instrumental works by Jean Baptiste Loeillet (1688-ca. 1720), known especially for his rich body of work composed for the flute, and by Jean-François Dandrieu (1682-1738). The latter, a child prodigy, performed in front of high-ranking courtiers at the age of five, and later went down in history as an outstanding organist and composer. His talent shines especially bright in the inventive and charming trio sonatas.
