The concert opens with the cantata Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener by Johann Jeremias du Grain (1700–1756) – a German composer who settled in Gdańsk in 1739. Shortly afterwards, he gave the city’s first public concert featuring a choir and orchestra – thus establishing in the port city the custom, so familiar to us today, of gathering for the sole purpose of listening to music.
Next, we will hear Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). The opening aria is pastoral in character, evoking the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd. The profound longing for “blissful repose” and “the soul’s delight” may find solace after death – in the heavenly pastures reached by renouncing sinful intentions and embarking upon the path of virtue.
Serving as a kind of interlude between the cantatas is the Ouverture in G minor by a distant relative of the Leipzig cantor – Johann Bernhard Bach (1676–1749). His outstanding instrumental compositions were incorporated by Johann Sebastian into the repertoire of the Leipzig Collegium Musicum.
The concert concludes with works by the festival’s patron – Johann Gottlieb Goldberg (1727–1756). Although few details of the famous Gdańsk-born musician’s life are known today, there is no doubt that he studied music with, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach. His church cantatas in the Bachian style most likely date from the period of his studies with the Leipzig cantor, around 1742: Durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit, written for the Feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, and Hilf, Herr, die Heiligen haben abgenommen, a setting of Psalm 12.
