Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony in G minor KV 550 from 1788 belongs to the triad of the composer’s last works of this genre. For many years, the circumstances of their creation were shrouded in an aura of mystery. In a monograph devoted to Mozart first published in 1945, Alfred Einstein wrote: “[…] this is perhaps symbolic of their position in the history of music and of human endeavour, representing no occasion, no immediate purpose, but an appeal to eternity.” Although today this romantic approach the works of the Viennese master may seem somewhat outdated, and Mozart’s selflessness in this period of his life is difficult to prove, the Symphony in G minor remains one of his most exemplary and renowned orchestral works. The minor key gives it a melancholic character, and the theme opening the first movement – full of activity and expression, foreshadows the dramatic tension present throughout the entire composition, while still maintaining the classic and balanced elegance of Mozart’s style.
