In the 17th century divertimento gained much popularity among composers of the time. Excellent examples of these multi-part instrumental works, light-hearted in mood and casual in form, can be found in the catalogue of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
One of them is the Divertimento in B-flat major KV 240, in which the composer harmoniously combined the sound of two oboes, French horns, and bassoons. The presence of wind instruments suggests that the piece was meant to be played outside, as this was, after all, “garden music”. Simple form and texture in no way harm the beauty of the melody and its Mozart character. Thanks to the perfect sense of individual instruments and the way in which they are combined together, the listeners can experience true harmony.
