Divertimento means ‘entertainment, fun’ in Italian. The composition marked KV 522 in the catalogue of Mozart’s works offers a particular example of entertainment. The work is known under the telling title A Musical Joke, and is – according to Alfred Einstein, the famous biographer of Mozart – “a satire on bungler composers”. True, the work is filled with intentionally placed composing errors and seemingly unfortunate musical solutions. However, the final “surprise” will convince every listener that the uncommon sound is not a result of laziness, or – God forbid! – lack of talent, but proves that the genius of Vienna had a great sense of humour.
