Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) is one of the most distinguished composers of the Italian Baroque. Adored by his contemporaries for his virtuoso violin playing, today he is appreciated for his outstanding achievements as a composer. It is hard to deny Vivaldi’s genius – the innovative nature of the sounds, extraordinary melodic and harmonic inventiveness, the richness of expression and the unique splendour of the compositions keep inspiring new generations of performers.
These features are reflected both in the vocal-instrumental and orchestral works included in the program of this concert. After the overture from the opera L’Olimpiade opening of the event, we will hear moving arias interspersed with colourful and suspenseful string concerts. The whole is crowned with the cantata for alto voice Cessate, omai cessate RV 684, which tells the tale of unrequited love. The conventional formal structure – two arias preceded by recitative – hides a number of interesting musical solutions. Contrasts of colour, the juxtaposition of various rhythms and tempi precisely defined by the composer emphasize the dramatic expression of the composition. Recitatives and arias, structured like those in operas, are intended to convey the inner experiences of the protagonist. Thus, the virtuoso passages sparkle with affects reinforcing the meaningful message.
