There is certainly no place in the world where a man may travel with greater pleasure and advantage than in Italy<\/em>. With these words, Joseph Addison began the account of his journey to Italy, which he made just a few years before Haendel. Although young Haendel did not initially show such enthusiasm for the idea of travel, there is no doubt that his visits to Florence, Venice, Rome, and Naples played a key role in shaping his creative expression. So let us not be misled by the German text of Barthold Heinrich Brockes\u2019 poetry used in the cycle Neun deutsche Arien<\/em> HWV 202-210, which was written in London between 1724 and 1727 \u2013 the musical style of these pieces does not differ from the Italian works from this period. Although these arias are not part of a larger narrative, they too delight with their songful melodies, expert harmony, and natural, moderate expression- just like the solo passages from Rodelinda <\/em>or Julius Caesar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haendel\u2019s instrumental works are also written in the Italian style. In the Trio Sonata in G minor, HWV 387, one can clearly hear the inspiration from the work of Arcangelo Corelli. Similar influences are present in the sonata in the key of D minor, HWV 381. Although the four-movement piece fits into the structure of the so-called sonata da chiesa<\/em>, the fast movement following the solemn Adagio<\/em> brings to mind the dance rhythm of a gigue, inappropriate for church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
