Sophistication, worldliness, and romanticism – this is what we associate with the French culture of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. All these features are reflected in the vocal compositions of that time. In their songs, the leading composers living by the Seine demonstrated various shades of love and admiration for music from different corners of the globe. The first part of the concert will feature the expressive sounds of works by Henri Duparc (1848-1933), enchanting with the perfect marriage of melody and text. Among them, the song L’invitation au voyage, <\/em>set to the sensual poetry of Charles Baudelaire and dedicated to his beloved wife, in which the charming image of a distant country is an invitation to take a musical journey through the extraordinary sounds from this and another world.<\/p>\n

Equally amazing landscapes emerge from the feast of sound colors in the works by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), the most eminent members of musical impressionism. The first of these artists emulated the various hues of nature and shades of emotions enchanted in French poetry. Ravel, on the other hand, drew inspiration from the fiery temperament and flaming sensuality enchanted in Spanish dances, which can be heard in the cycle Don Quichotte \u00e0 Dulcin\u00e9e<\/em>. The composer also did not remain indifferent to the atmosphere of Greek folklore, which he expressed in the cycle Cinq m\u00e9lodies populaires grecques<\/em>. The harmonically and expressively rich arrangement put these traditional songs – mostly originating from the islands of Chios – into a new context, at the same time not taking away anything from the natural beauty of the original.<\/p>\n

The concert will end with the delightful song Plaisir d’amour<\/em> (The Pleasure of Love<\/em>) by Jean-Paul-\u00c9gide Martini, which has\u00a0continuously delighted and inspired audiences and musicians alike since 1784. It is no coincidence that the melody reminds one of a famous song from Elvis Presley’s repertoire.<\/p>\n
