– \u00a0this is Kasia\u2019s dilemma. Kasia is the main character of a two-act opera by Maciej Kamie\u0144ski, with libretto by Wojciech Bogus\u0142awski, based on Franciszek Bohomolec\u2019s comedy.<\/p>\n

Misery Contented<\/em> was commissioned in 1778 by king Stanis\u0142aw II August Poniatowski. The king was such a great patron of the arts that even the Stanis\u0142awowski Theatre (named after him) has a plafond painting of Apollo by Jan Bogumi\u0142 Plersch, which bears a very close resemblance to the king\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

This opera production, prepared by the Polish Royal Opera and directed by Jaros\u0142aw Kilian, is a symbolic tribute to the king in recognition of his generosity, for Poniatowski contributed both to the creation of this opera \u2013 the first surviving opera written in the Polish language \u2013 and to the creation of a theatre in the building of the Old Orangery at the Royal \u0141azienki Park.<\/p>\n
