In the second half of the 16th century and in the 17th century, Polish manors resounded with music. The high artistic level was dictated by ensembles centered around the royal court, but over the years, more and more groups led by outstanding artists were organized also at the courts of the Polish magnates – both secular and in churches and monasteries. Music was an inseparable part of sumptuous celebrations and small gatherings; it was an important element in building prestige.<\/p>\n

Among the instrumental works, canzonas, sonatas, and dances dominated the genre. This trend includes works by Marcin Mielczewski, well-known throughout Europe at that time, and works by composers associated with the Lutheran St. Mary’s Church in Gda\u0144sk – Kaspar F\u00f6rster, Balthasar Erben, and Johann Valentin Meder.<\/p>\n

Vocal-instrumental music, which will be heard in the interpretation of the great soprano Iwona Lubowicz, also originates from church music. The Jasna G\u00f3ra archives contain manuscripts of the works by\u00a0Marcin J\u00f3zef \u017babrowski – one of the most talented Polish composers of the 18th century, professionally connected to the capella<\/em> of the monastery. His beautiful Magnificat<\/em> stands out thanks to its captivating melody, interesting harmony and, above all, extraordinary expression, especially manifested in the passage Suscepit Israel<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Two works by Krystian J\u00f3zef Ruth, preserved in the archives of the Benedictine Convent in Sandomierz which the author was associated with in the 18th century, also have a church provenance. Another work written with the monastery ensemble in mind is Semper mi Jesu<\/em>, whose author, Antoni Milwid, led the ensemble of canons regular in Czerwi\u0144sk for over fifty years. On the other hand, the musical activity of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, whose two compositions close the concert program, was connected to the Silesian court of the Bishop of Wroc\u0142aw – Philip Gotthard von Schaffgotsch.<\/p>\n
