In the time of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, music for wind instruments was gaining in popularity. The composer’s sensitivity to the sound of aerophones can be heard clearly in his works in the genre of Harmoniemusik<\/em> – music written to be performed outdoors. The Overture from The Magic Flute <\/em>arranged for a wind quintet opening the concert program allows us to see the “outdoor” potential of the master’s orchestral works.<\/p>\n

The two other compositions were created much later. The Wind Quintet in G minor<\/em> by the French flautist Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) is one of the few late-Romantic quintets originally intended for wind instruments. As a reference to the former masters, the composer maintains the classical three-part formal arrangement. The piece delights with its melodic inventiveness, interesting harmony, sleek style and the skilful use of the timbre and technical possibilities of individual instruments.<\/p>\n

The event is crowned by the Wind Quintet<\/em> Op. 43 by Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) – one of the most important Danish composers. This excellent example of neoclassical chamber music was created in 1922 as a way to relax after finishing work on Symphony<\/em> No. 5<\/em>. In it, the composer gives musicians an excellent opportunity to show off the technical possibilities of their instruments, and. at the same time, shapes the entire piece in such a way as to give the work an almost orchestral sound.<\/p>\n
