Gioacchino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, and above all, Giuseppe Verdi – these are the masters of Italian Romantic opera, whose works continue to delight audiences around the world. While each of them brought their individual style into the opera world, contributing to the development of the genre, it is fascinating how they influenced each other. During his studies at the Neapolitan conservatory, Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) was a frequent guest at the local theatre, where he could draw from the experience of Rossini (1792-1868) and look for inspiration, among others, in the works of Donizetti (1797-1848). The arias of each of these composers are a testimony to the variety of colours and dramatic nuances that the Italian masters were able to paint with sound.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to predict whether the genius of Giuseppe Verdi would have blossomed fully were it not for the achievements of his illustrious predecessors. Overcoming the well-established standards of musical solutions, he introduced a new, fresh quality to the opera. Verdi paid particular attention to the dramatic coherence of his works, sometimes interfering with the final shape of the libretto. At the same time, he cared deeply about shaping beautiful melodies and an interesting musical form, perfectly sensing what a particular scene needs and the tastes of the audience, as evidenced by the extraordinary popularity of his operatic excerpts – both on the concert stages and in popular culture. Donizetti himself, after the premiere of one of Verdi’s early masterpieces – the opera Nabucco<\/em> – said with appreciation: Yet a genius!<\/em><\/p>\n
