Bach then wrote for Baron van Swieten […] six large symphonies for orchestra, where, according to Swieten’s wishes, he allowed himself to get completely carried away by his invention, disregarding the technical difficulties that come with it. […] It is likely that no other genius mind has ever created music of such greatness, courage and humour. The art would suffer an irreparable loss if these masterpieces were to be entombed as private property.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is difficult to imagine a more enthusiastic review than the one that Johann Friedrich Reichardt published in the Autobiographical Fragments, printed in the “Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung” in 1814. The manuscripts of the excellent symphonies of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach from 1773, considered lost for many years, were not found until the 20th<\/sup> century. Having returned to the stages, they can once more be enjoyed by contemporary audiences.<\/p>\n

Not baroque anymore, but not yet classical – the Hamburg symphonies signal the birth of new musical aesthetics, of a new musical order. An innovative approach to form and unprecedented harmonious inventiveness herald a stylistic change, the continuation of which can be found, for example, in the works of the famous Viennese classics – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.<\/p>\n
