The famous Italian castrato Senesino, or rather Francesco Bernardi, took by storm the operatic stages in the first half of the 18th century. He performed in the most important theaters in his home country – including Venice, Bologna, Rome, Ferrara, Florence, and Naples. His famously daunting and difficult character did not prevent him from developing his career also abroad. Known for his strong and clear voice, he was famous for his perfect intonation, excellent acting and sublime musical taste.<\/p>\n

Bernardi\u2019s extraordinary artistic talent and outstanding skills inspired leading composers who wrote demanding vocal parts especially for him. Among the artists enchanted with Senesino’s voice was, for instance, Georg Friedrich Handel, in whose operas the singer played as many as twenty roles, including works such as Giulio Cesare<\/em> or Rodelinda.<\/em> He also dazzled the audience in parts created by Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Lotti and Giovanni Battista Bononcini. His last stage appearance known today was the performance of Il triomfo di Camilla<\/em> by Nicola Porpora, which took place in S. Carlo in 1740. Although only accounts of this extraordinary performer have survived to this day, thankfully we can still experience the works created for him performed by outstanding contemporary musicians.<\/p>\n

During the concert, baroque arias will be interpreted by one of the most prominent countertenors of the young generation – Rafa\u0142 Tomkiewicz. He will be accompanied by the Period Instruments Ensemble of the Polish Royal Opera Capella Regia Polona, led by maestro Krzysztof Garstka at the harpsichord.<\/p>\n
