Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy wrote the Violin Concerto in D minor<\/em> in 1822, when he was only thirteen. Kept in the style of Mozart and dedicated to his beloved teacher – Edward Rietz, it is one of the works that testify to the extraordinary talent of the young artist. This youthful, energetic piece delights with its lightness and melodic inventiveness. The concert was discovered for contemporary audiences by the famous American virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin, who edited the work for publication and gave its first public performance in February 1952.<\/p>\n

The second part of the concert will feature a fully mature work – Symphony in G major<\/em> No. 92 by Joseph Haydn. It is the last symphony of the Viennese master written before his travels to London. Although it was written around 1788 in Paris, it was heard for the first time in 1791 in Oxford – on the occasion of awarding the composer with the title of doctor honoris causa<\/em> from the local university – hence its nickname “Oxford”, popularized at the beginning of the 19th century. In terms of style, the work already heralds the perfection of the sound characteristic of the “London” symphonies. Expressive themes, deep emotionality, and incredible inventiveness in the use of traditional techniques – that is what invariably delights and inspires musicians and audiences until this day.<\/p>\n
