Although Alessandro Scarlatti is known mainly for his opere serie<\/em>, he did not shy away from introducing comedic\u00a0elements even in works based on serious themes. This famous composer often embellished the dramatic plot with parodic scenes, which gives his\u00a0pieces a certain lightness. Scarlatti’s catalogue of works also includes a number of independent comic opera scenes. They played the role of a humorous interlude performed during the break of a more serious performance. Intermedia of this type usually required the participation of two soloists, accompanied by a small orchestra.<\/p>\n

These short dramatic forms – despite the change in their function and staging concept – have not lost their relevance. The humorous scenes and dialogues\u00a0are a reflection of human characters and vices, while love affairs, jealousy, betrayal and deception are the elements that make these works universal.<\/p>\n

“At the end of the seventies [\u2026], I learned about the existence of a manuscript containing Alessandro Scarlatti’s comedic intermedia from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries in the S\u00e4chsisch Landesbibliothek in Dresden. Luckily, soon after, I was passing through this hospitable city and, thanks to the courtesy of local librarians-musicologists, I received, in exchange for Polish manuscripts, a microfilm of 10 intermedia for two voices accompanied by a string ensemble and a harpsichord”.<\/p>\n

This is how Stefan Sutkowski recalled bringing Alessandro Scarlatti’s comic intermedia to Poland in the 1970s. From the ten works contained\u00a0in the received manuscript, three were selected at that time: Gl’inganni felici<\/em>, Daphne<\/em> and Il pastor di Corinto<\/em>. And so, they became the foundation for the creation of the performance entitled Scene buffe<\/em>, which is returning to the stage of the Polish Royal Opera.<\/p>\n
