Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote violin sonatas all his life, with the first pieces of this genre dating back to 1762. In his early compositions, the piano plays the leading role, while the violin adds a pleasant to the ear yet not essential colour to the piece. The rich possibilities offered by the dialogue between two instruments seemed to have been noticed by Mozart only in the so-called Mannheim sonatas<\/em>, named after the place where they were composed. Among the works published in 1781 as Opus 1, we find the cheerful Sonata in B flat major<\/em>, KV 378. In a review by J.B. Cramer, included in the March 1783 edition of Magazin der Musik<\/em>, the piece was described as one of those sonatas where “the accompaniment of the violin is artfully combined […] with the piano part so that both instruments are kept in constant tension […]”.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Sonata in A major<\/em>, KV 526 from 1787 is undoubtedly one of the most mature works of this genre composed by Mozart. The composer strikes a delightful balance between the formal and expressive elements. Written in the galant<\/em> style, the piece is also an example of excellent counterpoint. It is worth paying attention to the finale, which, through a creative paraphrase of the last movement of the Violin Sonata in A major<\/em>, Op. 5 No. 5 by Friedrich Abel, pays tribute to the artist who had died just a few weeks before the completion of this outstanding composition.<\/p>\n
