Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote Don Giovanni<\/em> in 1787, commissioned by the Prague opera, just a year after its audience enthusiastically welcomed Le nozze di Figaro<\/em>. Faced with such success, then 22-year-old composer was soon asked to quickly create a new piece. Lorenzo da Ponte, librettist, with whom Mozart had many times cooperated before, suggested to write about Don Juan, the lecher. And so, Da Ponte took Burlador de Sevilla (The Seducer of Sevilla), <\/em>a <\/em>drama by Tirso de Molina, for the base of his perfect libretto. He also drew inspiration from Moli\u00e8re\u2019s play. The subject turned out to be incredibly inspiring for the young Mozart. Very shortly, he managed to create a piece which dazzled with its originality of musical arrangements, perfection of form and maturity of sound.<\/em><\/p>\n

Although Mozart listed the piece as simply opera buffa<\/em> in his private catalogue, this work is often classified as a narrower genre \u2013 dramma giocoso<\/em> (a jocular drama), since the Viennese genius crossed over the boundaries of established form and masterfully subordinated music to the dramatic events. By interweaving tragic and humorous elements, he was able to create a musical reality which perfectly rendered the complexity of the story and deepened the delineation of individual characters.<\/p>\n

Don Giovanni<\/em> holds an important position in the repertoire of the world\u2019s most renown opera theatres. Ever since its premiere in Prague in 1787 up to the end of the 18th<\/sup> century, as well as throughout the whole 19th<\/sup> century, there was no single year in which Don Giovanni<\/em> wouldn\u2019t be staged. What is more, its unparalleled popularity hasn\u2019t faded away during the 20th<\/sup> and into the 21st<\/sup> century. The documentation of numerous productions over the centuries shows names of the most famous conductors and singers, including: Ezio Pinza, Thomas Allen, Fiorenza Cossotto, Kiri Te Kanawa, Claudio Desderi, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Herbert von Krajan, Karl B\u00f6hm and many others.<\/p>\n
