The heartbreaking story of Stabat Mater Dolorosa, the medieval prose, has for centuries been an inexhaustible inspiration for painters, sculptors, poets, and above all \u2013 composers. The dramatic description of Our Lady\u2019s suffering, looking at the martyr\u2019s death of her only son, was constantly present in the works of the greatest of artists: Gioacchino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi, and later, in the\u00a020th<\/sup> century: Karol Szymanowski, Arvo P\u00e4rt and\u00a0Krzysztof Penderecki, to name a few.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest works of the Baroque era on the subject is Stabat Mater by Antonio Vivaldi. The composer didn\u2019t use more than half of the original liturgical text, concentrating on the most faithful reflection of the image of the crying Mary. He skillfully applied figures of speech and music, as well as harmonic means, which led to creating an exceptionally meaningful and deeply moving composition.<\/p>\n

Stabat Mater also led to discovering a genius inside Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, who died prematurely. Tormented by his illness and suspecting a soon death, the then barely 25-year-old composer created a masterpiece. The world marvelled at its suggestive musical content and clarity of construction. Despite a modest cast, (soprano, alto, two violins and basso continuo), this composition dazzles with enchanting melodies, moving arias and effective instrumental sequences. Over the past three hundred years, it was this exact power of expression that has guaranteed Pergolesi the leading seat among numerous artists attempting to depict the story of Our Lady of Sorrows, grieving by the cross.<\/p>\n
